This is the email that was sent home the first week of school:
The Howard County Public School System is known for having one of the finest music programs in the state. As director of the instrumental music program at Rockburn Elementary School, I plan to continue this excellent instrumental music tradition.
For interested students, instrumental music lessons are provided as a regular part of the school program during the day. Students may start Orchestra (violin, viola or cello) in 3rd grade and start Band (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone/euphonium, bells/percussion) in 4th grade. My hope is that they will enjoy playing and continue into 5th grade, middle school and beyond.
You, as the parent/guardian, will be responsible for renting/purchasing the instrument and instruction books. Needless to say, it is best to use the “RENT-TO-OWN” plan until you are reasonably satisfied that your child has progressed enough to warrant instrument purchase. If you decide not to rent an instrument, please speak with me BEFORE purchasing an instrument so I can help you make an informed decision. Also, please do not allow your child to play with/on the instrument until I have seen and prepared it.
I have been acquainting your child with instrument choices this week. Hopefully, they are excited and interested in joining our program. Please log onto CANVAS (Enrichment Orchestra/Band) and fill out the online form. You should do this as soon as possible but no later than September 18th. This link is also available on the Rockburn Elementary website homepage. Once I have helped your child identify the instrument they will be most successful on and the instrument choice has been approved by me, you will receive an email with more information. If you do not have internet access, please send in a note and I print out the form for you to complete.
4th grade students who are continuing in orchestra (violin, viola, cello or bass) will receive different information this week. String students will start lessons next week. Please look to see an different email with this information.
Students will be expected to participate in two concerts that are held each year. The winter concert (January) will be held during school and students will perform for RES students. This concert will be recorded and placed in Canvas for parents to view. The spring concert will be held in the evening and students will perform for family members/friends at a local high school. The winter concert assembly date will be announced as soon as it is confirmed. The spring concert is set for May 30 at Long Reach High School.
Students will receive Band or Orchestra report cards during the school year that will help keep you updated on your child’s progress. These will be placed with their 1st – 4th quarter report cards. Students who participate will be expected to attend all class lessons, rehearsals and concerts as well as complete assigned classwork and homework for their instrument.
In some cases we may get an overload of certain instruments or due to varying physical attributes, a student may not be suited for an instrument. If this happens, I will most likely suggest a similar instrument where your child has the chance to have a more positive and successful experience, performance opportunities may be greater and which will maintain a balance in the band or orchestra. This is why some students will be asked to go through an audition process before getting permission to perform on a certain instrument.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. My e-mail address (the easiest way to reach me) is [email protected] or you may call the school at 410-313-5030. I look forward to working with your child.
Sincerely,
Margaret Twigg
Director of Instrumental Music
